Back in caveman times, they'd grab a woman and tie her up until she agreed not to run away. After she agreed, her hands were untied.... But a bit of rope was placed on her finger as a reminder.
Eventually the rope got replaced with metal rings..... and ironically, women are happy to wear them!
Meh, we all knew Fyndir would eventually tie you up. :D
